July Consumer Spending Stalls as Inflation Holds at 3.7%

National economic data released Wednesday by the Commerce Department show that American consumers pulled back on discretionary purchases in July. After a 0.4% month‑over‑month gain in June, real consumer spending was flat in July, signaling a sharp slowdown in household demand.

Inflation remains a headwind

The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index – the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge for its 2% inflation target – rose 0.2% from June, leaving the annual rate unchanged at 3.7%. Economists had expected a smaller 0.1% monthly increase and a modest dip in the year‑over‑year rate to 3.6%, according to FactSet forecasts.

When volatile food and energy costs are stripped out, the “core” PCE index also rose 0.2% month‑over‑month and is up 3.3% from a year ago. The persistence of these price pressures explains why many families are tightening belts despite higher after‑tax incomes.

Household savings see a modest rebound

July did bring a small but welcome improvement in the national savings rate. After falling to a four‑year low of 2.6% in June, the rate climbed to 3% in July, indicating that households are still setting aside a portion of their earnings for future needs.

Solid income gains helped cushion savings. After‑tax income grew 0.4% in July, the strongest monthly increase since January, a month traditionally boosted by Social Security adjustments and early‑year wage raises.

What the data mean for the Trump administration

These figures arrive as the Trump administration continues its focus on fiscal responsibility and supply‑side reforms aimed at lowering the cost of living for American families. By encouraging energy independence, reducing regulatory burdens, and supporting pro‑growth tax policies, the administration seeks to bring inflation closer to the 2% target while preserving the purchasing power of hardworking households.

While the latest numbers show inflation still above the desired level, the modest rise in the savings rate suggests that families are responding to the administration’s message of prudence and personal responsibility. Continued vigilance on price pressures will be essential as the economy moves forward.

Looking ahead

Analysts will watch upcoming reports on employment, wages, and core inflation to gauge whether the current slowdown in spending is a temporary pause or the beginning of a broader trend. For now, the data underscore the importance of fiscal policies that protect families, uphold the Constitution’s guarantee of economic liberty, and reinforce the traditional values that keep neighborhoods strong.
