A Texas judge has restricted operations at the Quail Creek Gun Range in Northlake, Texas, after bullets from the range struck a nearby middle school. The range, which has been in operation since 1980, is located 1.2 miles from Floyd Barksdale Middle School.
The school district found two bullets that had hit the school over the summer, prompting concerns about student safety. The district filed a lawsuit against the gun range, seeking to restrict its operations.
Restrictions Imposed
The judge’s ruling restricts certain types of firearms and bullets that can be used at the range, citing the potential for them to reach the school. The gun range’s firing line faces north towards the school, and while there are berms in place to stop bullets, the district argued that it is possible for someone to elevate a firearm enough to fire over the berms.
The school district stated that it has no intention of shutting down the gun range, but rather ensuring that reasonable safety standards are met to protect students, staff, and the community. The gun range can resume all operations if it implements appropriate safety measures.
A court hearing on the injunction is scheduled for August 20.
