Far-left journalist Joy Reid recently stated that Juneteenth is the true day that should be commemorated to celebrate American freedom, not July 4th. Reid claimed that no one she knows who’s Black celebrates Independence Day.
Reid’s Comments
Reid spoke with MS NOW analyst Alex Wagner on her YouTube show, saying that while her White friends love to celebrate America’s Independence Day on the Fourth of July, Black folks only take the day off and barbecue because they have the day off, but nobody she knows is really excited about the 4th of July.
Reid compared this to how Indigenous peoples of the North American continent feel about Thanksgiving, saying that Black people feel the same way about the Fourth of July. She argued that Juneteenth is the real thing that the Fourth of July is, because the United States really was not a democracy until it ended slavery.
Reid also noted that former President Abraham Lincoln originally was willing to tolerate slavery even if he disliked it, so long as he could keep the union together. She went on to argue that Lincoln was ‘highkey racist’, to the point he advocated for sending Black people back to Africa.
