Following a recent kayaking rescue in Johnston, the local Parks and Recreation Department is offering safety tips to the community. Molly Moore, with the department, is teaching classes on kayaking basics and safety.
Kayaking Safety Essentials
Moore emphasizes the importance of wearing a life jacket that fits, having sun protection, staying hydrated, and always having a buddy while kayaking. In case a kayak tips, she advises staying calm, especially when on rivers, as the current can pick up quickly.
After big storms, water levels can be high and dangerous for kayaking due to debris, large rapids, and underwater turbulence. Moore encourages being outside and engaging in recreational activities for mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
Kayaking is available for free at Terra Lake Park, Monday through Friday, until mid-September, thanks to new partnerships with ICON Water Trails.
