Johnson County Primary Results

Six Kansas House districts in Johnson County saw contested primary races on Tuesday. The winners of these races will now represent their party in the November general election, when every Kansas House seat will be on the ballot.

Results by District

Incumbent Courtney Sappington will be the Republican nominee for District 5, which covers a small corner of southwestern Johnson County, as well as parts of Douglas, Franklin and Miami counties. Sappington received 1,848 votes or 55%. Her challengers, Courtney L. Crawford and Jon Chitwood, received 1,037 votes or 31% and 453 votes or 14% of the votes respectively.

Laura Johnson secured the Democratic nomination for House District 26, which covers parts of Olathe, Overland Park and Spring Hill. Johnson received 1,711 votes or 73% of Tuesday’s primary vote. Her opponent Robert Collins garnered 646 votes, or 27%, based on unofficial results.

Democratic voters chose Sara Kiewiet to move on to the general election for House District 27, which covers parts of southern Leawood and Overland Park, near the state line. Kiewiet received 1,914 votes or 74%. She ran against C. Edward Young, who got 657 votes or 26%.

Amelia Wiederaenders beat out two opponents to secure the Democratic nomination for House District 30, which covers parts of Lenexa, Olathe and Shawnee in central Johnson County. Wiederaenders garnered 936 votes, or 38%. Her challengers, Zachary Thomas Hawkins and Tyler Holmes, received 712 votes, or 29%, and 840 votes, or 34%, respectively.

Unofficial results after Tuesday show Tim Lundberg as the Democratic nominee for House District 78, which covers part of Olathe. Lundberg received 1,533 votes or 64%. His opponent, KaMesha Bernard, garnered 854 votes or 36%, based on unofficial results.

Thomas Palenske will be the Republican nominee for House District 121, which covers a large swath of western Johnson County, including parts of De Soto, Gardner and Olathe. With 1,490 votes or 52%, Palenske beat out incumbent Mike Storm, who received 1,372 votes or 48%.
