Johnny Appleseed Festival Adjusts Layout After Heavy Rain in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne – The Johnny Appleseed Festival is adapting to this weekend’s wet weather by moving several key attractions to higher ground. Officials said the lower portion of the festival grounds, which sits on a floodplain beside the St. Joseph River, became unsafe after recent rain caused the river to rise.

Relocated attractions

The Trappers N Traders exhibit, traditionally set near the river, will now be positioned close to Johnny Appleseed’s gravesite. The Civil War reenactment area has been shifted to a spot near the Root Beer stand, while the children’s activity zone will be located by the boat ramp on the hill, away from the flood‑prone area.

Organizers’ response

Festival board member Michael Thena told WANE 15 that this is the first time in his roughly 30 years with the event that such extensive changes have been necessary. Festival Director of Administration Becky Butler added that crews began setting up on Monday but have had to adjust their plans throughout the week due to the persistent rain.

Event schedule remains unchanged

Despite the weather challenges, the festival will open as planned. Visitors are encouraged to come prepared with rain gear such as umbrellas, ponchos, or waterproof footwear. The Johnny Appleseed Festival will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Johnny Appleseed Park.

What to expect

Attendees can still enjoy the festival’s traditional offerings, including live music, local food vendors, and family‑friendly activities, now situated in safer locations. The organizers emphasized that safety is their top priority and that the layout changes will not diminish the overall experience.

Community impact

The festival is a long‑standing celebration of Fort Wayne’s heritage and draws families from across the region. By promptly adjusting the layout, the organizers demonstrate a commitment to preserving this community tradition while ensuring public safety during inclement weather.
