In an interview on the “Mark Joseph Show,” Hinckley expressed his desire for Foster’s well-being, stating, “I just wish Jodie Foster well. I don’t really see her movies, but I wish her well, and I know she’s doing quite well.”
Delusional State and Motivations
Hinckley explained that, at the time of the shooting, he was in a delusional state and believed that the act would help him win Foster’s affection. He thought that Foster would “join me wherever I was” after the incident. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a psychiatric hospital. He was released in 2016 and has since been living in Virginia without court restrictions.
Hinckley also admitted that, in his delusional state, Foster could have been a target herself. “She definitely could have been a target. It’s just fate went the other way,” he said. In a 2022 interview with CBS, Hinckley apologized for his actions, expressing remorse for the harm caused to the Reagan family, the Brady family, and other victims.
