The Jersey Village City Council is currently accepting applications for Place 3 on the council. The application period will close on July 10 at 5 p.m. Applicants will have the opportunity to present a three-minute pitch to the council at the July 21 regular meeting, after which the council will make its selection.
Background on the Vacancy
The vacancy was created when council member Martin resigned due to relocation outside of Jersey Village. Martin expressed her gratitude for the experience she gained while serving on the council and recommended Ashley Brown as her replacement.
Mayor James Singleton encouraged interested individuals to apply for the position, stating that it is an opportunity to make a difference in the community. The selected appointee will immediately take the Place 3 seat.
Other Council Business
In other news, council member Simon Hughes requested that a $7,000 increase to the over-65 homestead exemption be placed on the June 15 agenda for discussion. However, no action was taken on the item. Hughes expressed his concern for the senior residents in Jersey Village and recognized the challenges they face in paying bills on a fixed income.
The council also approved a bid for two trailer-mounted diesel emergency generators to be used for municipal wastewater lift stations. Additionally, the council unanimously approved two items allowing the City Manager to take steps toward completing various improvement projects for the city.
