The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which was recently renovated at a cost of over $13 million, has been plagued by an algae problem. The Trump administration has taken action to address the issue, with crews using hip-waders to vacuum up clumps of algae and workers dumping gallons of hydrogen peroxide into the pool.
Efforts to Combat Algae
The Department of Interior has installed a state-of-the-art filtration system, known as the ozone nanobubbler, which is working to destroy the algae bloom. The hydrogen peroxide is being used as a milder treatment for algae, with no harmful side effects to marine life or the environment.
A worker involved in the cleanup efforts joked that it would take an entire lifetime to clean the pool. The company responsible for installing the filtration system, Greenwater Services, did not respond to requests for comment.
The White House has not commented on whether President Trump is aware of the cleanup efforts or has spoken to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum about the issue.
