Jerome Powell Warns Against Political Pressure on Key Institutions

In a significant public appearance, former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivered a speech at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, where he highlighted the critical need to safeguard independent institutions from political pressure. Powell, who recently stepped down as Fed Chair, was honored with the JFK Profile in Courage Award for his efforts to maintain the central bank’s independence.

Powell underscored the importance of institutions like universities, courts, Congress, and the Federal Reserve, describing them as foundational to democracy. He warned that allowing political interference in these bodies could erode the credibility they have built over decades. His remarks come in the wake of his tenure, during which he often clashed with former President Trump over monetary policy decisions.

Despite stepping down as Chair, Powell remains on the Fed’s governing board until 2028, a move that prevents the current administration from appointing another board member. The Trump administration’s attempts to remove Fed governor Lisa Cook have also been blocked by the courts, preserving her position on the rate-setting committee.

Powell’s speech did not directly mention Trump but emphasized the necessity of insulating monetary policy from political influence, a principle upheld by Congress and other advanced economies. He also acknowledged past mistakes during his tenure, particularly in managing inflation during the pandemic, and stressed the importance of adapting and learning from such experiences.

The JFK Profile in Courage Award has been recognizing public servants since 1989, with past recipients including notable figures like former Presidents Obama and Bush. This year, alongside Powell, residents of Minnesota’s Twin Cities were honored for their courageous actions during a federal immigration crackdown.

Caroline Kennedy and her son, Jack Schlossberg, highlighted the importance of individuals like Powell and the Minnesota residents in upholding America’s democratic promises. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, present at the event, noted the unique recognition of ordinary citizens rather than elected officials, emphasizing the courage displayed by the community in standing up for their values.
