Jefferson County is taking concrete steps to ensure every Kentuckian can vote in the upcoming midterm elections. Starting Wednesday, the Jefferson County Election Center on East Liberty Street opened its doors for in‑person excused absentee voting, allowing voters who cannot appear on Election Day to cast their ballots early.
Hours and locations
For the first round, the Election Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The following week, the same hours will apply on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition to the central location, more than two dozen sites across Jefferson County will offer in‑person voting, including a convenient drive‑through option at the Expo Center.
Who can use excused absentee voting?
Excused absentee voting is intended for voters who know they will be unable to vote on Election Day or on any of the designated no‑excuse early‑voting days. This includes individuals with work commitments, health concerns, caregiving responsibilities, or other legitimate reasons that prevent them from reaching a polling place on the scheduled day.
Early‑voting schedule
Kentucky’s no‑excuse early‑voting period runs from Oct. 29 through Halloween, Oct. 31. After that window closes, the in‑person excused absentee option provides an additional safety net for those who missed the earlier dates. Early voting in neighboring Indiana is already underway and will continue through Nov. 2, offering a regional example of how states are expanding access to the ballot.
What to bring
Voters should bring a valid photo ID and any documentation that supports their excuse, such as a doctor’s note or employer verification, to the voting site. Election officials will verify eligibility on the spot and then allow the voter to complete a ballot in a private booth.
Why this matters
Providing multiple avenues for early voting aligns with the principle of individual liberty, ensuring that every citizen has a fair chance to participate in the democratic process. By expanding access, Jefferson County helps families keep their voting traditions strong while respecting the demands of modern life.
