JD Vance’s New Book

Vice President JD Vance has released a new book titled ‘Communion’, which chronicles his conversion to Catholicism. The book comes at a time when Vance is facing a consequential decision about his political future and has emerged as a leading negotiator in the Trump administration’s agreement to end its war with Iran.

Vance’s Faith Journey

In ‘Communion’, Vance delivers a deeply personal account of his faith journey, centered mostly on his experiences in the years surrounding his rise to literary fame. He discusses his pivot from author to politics and his time inside the White House, but focuses primarily on his spiritual growth.

Vance also addresses one of his most controversial statements, in which he criticized ‘childless cat ladies’. He now regrets the comment, calling it ‘one of the dumbest things I ever said’ and a distraction from his actual point: that American society has grown ‘pathologically hostile to having kids’.

Abortion and Family

Vance offers a third approach to the abortion debate, centered on improving conditions for mothers, children, and families. He argues that when having babies is a drag on economic activity, the economic system favors terminating pregnancies. Instead, he hopes to lead to fewer women believing they need to end a pregnancy by supporting families and children.

Vance points to the successful 2023 Ohio ballot referendum that enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution as a lesson for Republicans. He argues that women will reject attempts to eliminate ‘the last option they thought they had left’ and that leaders should focus on policies that uplift families over gross domestic product.

Vance’s Vision for a Christian Approach

Vance connects his vision for a Christian approach to economics directly with his Catholic faith. He argues that Christians should care about more than just social issues like abortion and marriage, but should also consider the real lives of most people. He hopes to resist the effort to confine Christ’s moral teachings to a few social issues and instead promote a broader Christian approach to economics.
