Japan’s Manufacturing Growth Slows Amid Rising Costs

Japan’s manufacturing sector continued to grow in May, though at a slower pace than the previous month, according to the latest data from the S&P Global Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The PMI stood at 54.5, slightly down from April’s 55.1, indicating continued expansion but at a reduced rate.

Impact of Global Events

The slowdown in growth is attributed to rising costs driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected raw material prices. Despite these challenges, export orders have increased significantly, marking the fastest growth since May 2021, particularly due to demand from the U.S. and other Asian countries.

Annabel Fiddes, Economics Associate Director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that the current expansion is partly fueled by stockpiling efforts. Manufacturers and their clients are building inventories to safeguard against potential product shortages and mitigate price risks associated with the Middle East conflict.

Challenges and Opportunities

While new orders have expanded at a slower rate, the surge in export business highlights the global demand for Japanese goods. However, input costs have surged at the fastest pace since September 2022, leading to the highest selling prices since October 2022.

Business confidence has improved since April, despite previous lows due to tariff impacts. Manufacturers remain optimistic about growth in sectors like AI and electronics, though they acknowledge that rising costs and global economic uncertainties could pose challenges in the future.
