James Gallagher, a Republican Assemblymember from East Nicolaus, California, has been elected to serve the remainder of the late U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa’s term in Congress. Gallagher secured 62.6% of the vote in the special election held during California’s primary, demonstrating strong support in Northern California.
Gallagher, who is also running for the full term starting in January 2027, will face California state Sen. Mike McGuire in the November midterm election. In the primary for the 2027-29 term, Gallagher received 47.2% of the vote, while McGuire garnered 37.5%. Gallagher’s campaign focuses on addressing healthcare and cost of living issues for the North State.
McGuire, who thanked voters for their support, emphasized the need for representation that moves beyond the perceived chaos of the previous administration. Meanwhile, in Congressional District 11, state Sen. Scott Wiener leads with 41.3% of the vote, followed by San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan at 28.6%, both advancing to the November election.
In other races, U.S. Rep. Adam Gray will compete against Republican Kevin Lincoln III for Congressional District 13. Additionally, Sonja Shaw, a Republican and Chino Unified School Board Chair, leads the race for California’s superintendent of public instruction, advocating for traditional values in education.
