Jacksonville Enhances City Council Website for Accessibility

Jacksonville has taken a significant step to ensure that its City Council website is accessible to all residents, including those with disabilities. After being offline for over a month, the website is now back online with enhancements that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Improved Accessibility Features

The updated website now allows individuals with vision impairments or other disabilities to easily adjust the appearance of agenda items. This includes options to enlarge text size, increase contrast, and make fonts more readable, particularly for those with dyslexia. These changes are part of a broader effort to make public information more accessible to all citizens.

City Council spokesperson Teresa Eichner emphasized the importance of these updates, stating that ensuring public information and services are accessible to all residents is a priority for the city. The enhancements are designed to improve both accessibility and the overall user experience.

Comprehensive Updates

City officials noted that documents linked within the Legislative Gateway from 2019 to April 2026 were not previously ADA compliant in PDF form. Now, each document features a PDF button that, when selected, provides a drop-down menu with options for enhanced readability. Additionally, an HTML version of the agenda and minutes is available for download, ensuring compliance with ADA standards.

Prior to these updates, while agendas for past and scheduled City Council meetings were accessible, individual bills were not. With the new system in place, residents can now access these documents seamlessly, supporting transparency and engagement in local governance.
