Israel Reclaims Historic Beaufort Castle Amid Southern Lebanon Conflict

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have successfully captured the historic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, a site of strategic importance due to its location near the city of Nabatiyeh and approximately nine miles from the Israeli border. This move marks the first time in 26 years that Israel has held the castle, which was originally built by the Crusaders over 900 years ago.

Strategic Importance and Military Operations

The IDF’s operation focuses on gaining control over the Beaufort Ridge and the Wadi al-Saluki area, with the aim of dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure. According to an IDF statement, the operation began several days ago, involving a significant number of ground troops to expand the Forward Defense Line. The area around Beaufort Ridge has been a hub for Hezbollah’s military activities, including numerous attacks.

In response to the Israeli incursion, Hezbollah claimed to have destroyed an Israeli tank near the castle. Meanwhile, the Lebanese state news agency reported intense bombardment and air raids by Israeli forces in the surrounding area. The Arnoun Municipality has condemned the bombings and called on international organizations to protect the castle, which UNESCO has recognized as a cultural property with enhanced protection status.

Political Reactions and Broader Implications

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized the operation’s message to Israel’s adversaries, stating that those who threaten Israeli civilians will lose their strategic assets. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich echoed this sentiment, advocating for a doctrine of permanent territorial control and aggressive military action.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified despite a US-mediated ceasefire agreement in April. Israeli forces have expanded their operations north of the Litani River, issuing evacuation orders for villages in the area. The situation poses potential risks to any agreements between the United States and Iran, with the latter insisting on a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of negotiations.

As the conflict continues, the international community watches closely, with US President Donald Trump expressing support for Israel’s actions against perceived threats.
