Israel has created the 96th army division to counter new security threats along its border with Jordan, following Hamas’ terrorist invasion on October 7, 2023. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has granted access to military bases on the frontlines in the fight against Iran’s regime, terrorism, and illegal entry of Palestinians seeking work in Israel.
Strategic Competition
A military official stated that the Jordanian border is a peace border, but there is a strategic competition over Jordan, with Iran’s regime understanding the strategic advantage of the area. The IDF has reactivated 45 military bases between Israel and Jordan, built after the 1967 Six-Day War, to thwart smuggling attempts and ensure peace in the region.
The military bases, part of Division 96, cover 250 air miles and approximately 242.3 miles of territory. The IDF has also increased the number of reserve soldiers and built a new wall to prevent illegal entry. The construction of the wall has led Palestinians to seek legal entry points into Israel.
Defense System
The new Israeli border system in the Jordan Valley consists of three layers: military outposts, a wall, and military bases. The system aims to prevent terrorism, narcotics and weapons smuggling, and illegal entry. The IDF has also increased the number of reserve soldiers, with five new battalions of soldiers who were never engaged in service or finished their service and wish to return to duty.
