Maine Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, Graham Platner, has denied allegations of forcing a woman to have sex with him nearly five years ago. Platner stated that he is taking time to reflect on the best path forward for his campaign.
Allegations and Response
According to a Politico report, the woman detailed the allegation in three interviews, and the publication reviewed documents, including emails between the woman and her therapist. Platner did not indicate whether he is considering suspending his campaign or dropping out of the race.
The Senate seat, currently held by Republican Senator Susan Collins, is a key target for Democrats seeking to gain majority control of the Senate. Republicans currently hold 53 Senate seats, while Democrats control 47, and they would need a net gain of four seats to take over the 100-member chamber.
