Israel Expresses Concerns Over Hamas Disarmament Deal

Israel has expressed serious concerns over a proposed disarmament deal with Hamas, citing the militant group’s lack of commitment to genuinely demilitarizing. According to Doron Spielman, spokesperson for the Israeli Prime Minister’s office, Israel’s intelligence assessment indicates that Hamas remains committed to rebuilding its military rather than disarming.

Disarmament Deal Details

The proposed deal, brokered by the US, calls on Hamas to surrender its weapons and destroy its network of tunnels. In exchange, Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza, and a new technocratic Palestinian government would be established. However, Israel has stated that it will not withdraw its forces before Hamas disarms, citing concerns that the group will quickly expand its presence and threaten Israeli communities.

The deal has been met with skepticism by Israel, which has continued to strike Gaza, targeting Hamas military operatives. Overnight strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people, including children. The Israeli military has stated that the strikes were targeting Hamas military operatives, but has not elaborated further.

The proposed disarmament deal has been a sticking point in negotiations, with Israel insisting that Hamas must physically give up its weapons. The US has announced a 20-point ceasefire plan, which includes the disarmament of Hamas and the deployment of an international security force. However, the process of decommissioning and storing heavy weapons, as well as dismantling military production sites and tunnels, will be linked to a phased Israeli withdrawal.
