What do you actually do on a Saturday afternoon in Lewisville when you don’t want to drive to Dallas but you also don’t want to just sit in a chain restaurant staring at your phone? That’s the question I kept asking myself until a friend finally dragged me to Funky Picnic Brewery & Café, and I’ve spent most of the time since recommending it to people who ask me that same thing.
The brewery sits off South Mill Street in a renovated space that manages to feel both industrial and genuinely comfortable — exposed ductwork overhead, wood and concrete underfoot, and a patio out back that earns its keep on every decent weather day Lewisville gets. It’s the kind of room that doesn’t try too hard. Tables fill up at a reasonable pace on weekends, the staff actually knows the beer list, and nobody’s rushing you toward the door.
The beer is the first real reason to show up. The rotating tap list leans toward the adventurous without veering into gimmick territory. On my last visit they were pouring a smooth German-style lager that would convert a Bud Light loyalist without an argument, alongside a hazy IPA with a citrus bite that didn’t overstay its welcome, and a dark milk stout that tasted like the best parts of dessert without being cloying. Pints run around $6–$8, flights let you cover a lot of ground for roughly $12–$15, and the bartenders are good at steering you away from something you’ll regret.
The café side is the second reason, and it’s one people overlook. This isn’t bar food dressed up in a blazer. The kitchen puts out sandwiches and small plates that could carry a meal on their own — the smash burger has become something of an anchor on the menu, the grain bowls are genuinely filling and not just a token healthy option, and whatever pastry the baker has out that day is worth picking up without asking too many questions. Weekend brunch adds eggs and biscuits to the mix, and the coffee program is serious enough that I’ve stopped in mid-week just for an Americano and a seat by the window.
The third reason, honestly, is the atmosphere. Funky Picnic draws a wide mix — young families at the patio tables, solo remote workers with laptops in the corner, groups of friends who’ve clearly been here before and settled in like they mean it. There’s often live music on weekend evenings, nothing ear-splitting, usually a solo acoustic act or a small duo that adds texture without demanding attention. It’s the kind of place where two hours disappear without you noticing.
If you’re going on a weekend, aim for mid-afternoon on Saturday — busy enough to have energy, calm enough to find a spot without a wait. The patio fills first when the weather cooperates, so get there by 2 p.m. if you want a table outside. Dogs are welcome on the patio, which a lot of regulars have clearly figured out. Parking is street and small lot, easy enough.
Funky Picnic isn’t trying to be Lewisville’s answer to some bigger city brewery district. It’s just a well-run local spot that happens to make good beer and good food in the same building, on a block that rewards people who bother to look past the chain restaurants on 35. That’s enough.
