Iranian President Defends US‑Trump Memorandum as Path Out of Stalled Conflict

In a speech released by state‑run IRNA on Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump in June. Pezeshkian described the agreement as the most viable route for Iran to move beyond a condition he called “neither war nor peace.” He emphasized that the document contains no provision that amounts to capitulation and that Iran will follow the policies set by its Supreme Leader.

MoU Details and Deadline

The MoU established a 60‑day window for ending hostilities between the United States and Iran and for reaching a deal on Iran’s nuclear program. The deadline expired last week without a publicized compromise, particularly on the critical issue of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint essential to global shipping.

Economic Implications

Pezeshkian linked the agreement directly to Iran’s economic outlook, noting that the country cannot attract foreign investment while it remains in a prolonged stalemate. He warned that continued sanctions and a naval blockade have crippled the Iranian economy, which has been under pressure for more than six months of conflict with the United States and Israel.

Hard‑Line Security Response

Iran’s newly appointed Supreme National Security Council chief, Mohsen Rezaei, issued a stark warning to neighboring states. In an interview with state broadcaster IRIB, Rezaei said that any country that joins the United States in what he termed an “economic war” against Iran would face “seismic” retaliation. He specifically mentioned the possibility of targeting alternative oil‑shipping routes out of the Persian Gulf if neighbors cooperate with U.S. pressure.

Regional Diplomacy

Amid the heightened rhetoric, Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is scheduled to lead a delegation to Tehran on Monday, according to Iranian state television. Officials, speaking anonymously, described the visit as part of Islamabad’s effort to de‑escalate U.S.–Iran tensions and to encourage both sides to return to negotiations.

Domestic Security Actions

In a separate development, Iran’s judiciary announced the execution of Majid Adineh, a man arrested during the January protests in Mohammadshahr, near Karaj, west of Tehran. Authorities said Adineh possessed a handgun, stun guns, tear‑gas canisters and a battery‑powered chainsaw. A Revolutionary Court convicted him of espionage and cooperation with hostile states, alleging he acted on behalf of Israel, the United States and other adversaries.

Broader Conflict Context

The article also referenced the ongoing Israel‑Hamas conflict that began with the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas‑aligned militants. While a fragile cease‑fire has held since October, Israeli airstrikes continue, with health officials in Gaza reporting over 73,400 Palestinian deaths. Israeli forces have reported the killing of five of their soldiers since the cease‑fire.

Overall, the Iranian leadership presents the Trump‑signed MoU as a diplomatic avenue to end the war, revive the economy, and avoid further escalation, even as hard‑line officials signal readiness to respond forcefully to any regional cooperation with U.S. sanctions.
