Iranian Americans Face Complicated World Cup

In the San Fernando Valley, a group of Iranian Americans are navigating the complexities of cultural identity, sports, and politics as the World Cup kicks off. The Arya Football Club, composed of all Iranian or Iranian American players, is a microcosm of the larger community’s struggles.

Flag Controversy

The team’s jersey features the colors of the Iranian flag, but the design has sparked controversy. Some players prefer the historic Sun and Lion flag, which is associated with groups opposing Iran’s Islamic government. However, FIFA’s stadium code of conduct prohibits banners, flags, and apparel with political or discriminatory content.

Ramin Ghashghaei, a 61-year-old defender and immigration attorney, plans to boycott the tournament due to the Islamic Republic’s political grip on the sport. ‘That is not an Iranian national team in my opinion,’ he said. ‘In Iran, everything is about who you know, who you buy, political ideology. Do you support the Islamic Republic or you don’t? If you do, then maybe you get a priority to be in the team. That’s just a political move.’

Travel Restrictions and Competitive Disadvantage

The Iran team has faced significant logistical challenges, including visa delays, immigration restrictions, and travel bans. The team was originally supposed to be based in Tucson, Arizona, but instead landed at Tijuana International Airport and set up camp just south of the US border. Every group-stage match will involve a border crossing into the US, which poses a clear competitive disadvantage.

Omeed Askary, a 26-year-old Iranian American attorney, drew a parallel with the US team, saying, ‘I’m an American. I want American athletes to do really well. Does that mean I support President Trump, his administration, ICE, even the American military’s operations? Of course not. I still want my team to do well.’
