Iran is staging a week of mass funeral processions for slain leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with his three sons praying beside his coffin on Sunday. However, his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not make an appearance due to injuries sustained in the attack that killed his father.
Funeral Processions
The Islamic Republic is displaying Khamenei’s coffin, along with those of his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and 14-month-old granddaughter, in the vast courtyard of Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla. The funeral processions will take Khamenei’s remains to Shi’ite religious sites in neighboring Iraq.
A ceasefire has suspended the four-month-old war under an agreement with Washington, which Iran’s authorities say will bring huge economic benefits. U.S. President Donald Trump announced that peace talks had been paused for a week for the events surrounding the funeral.
