A 19-year-old Huxley man has been convicted in federal court after prosecutors say he intentionally struck and killed two Canada geese with his truck in Ankeny earlier this year.
Details of the Incident
Court documents and evidence presented during a bench trial showed that on March 3, 2026, the man was driving east on N.E. 70th Avenue in Ankeny when he accelerated and swerved into the westbound lane to hit one Canada goose. Prosecutors said he then swerved back into the eastbound lane to strike a second goose.
Canada geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a federal law that prohibits the unauthorized taking, killing or possession of protected migratory birds.
The man faces a maximum sentence of six months in prison, five years of probation, one year of supervised release, and a $15,000 fine. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
