Iowa Hawkeyes dominate Northern Illinois 40-0 in season opener

In front of a packed Kinnick Stadium crowd, the No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes opened their 2026 football season with a decisive 40-0 victory over Northern Illinois. The win highlighted Iowa’s stout defense and a breakout performance by senior running back Kamari Moulton, who set a new personal best with 183 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Ground game carries the day

Moulton, who led the Hawkeyes in rushing last season, shattered his previous career high of 114 yards in the first quarter alone. He racked up 132 yards before halftime, punctuated by long runs of 50 and 37 yards that put the game out of reach early. His effort earned him the game’s offensive MVP honors and gave Iowa a strong foundation for the rest of the season.

Quarterback competition still wide open

The game also offered the first regular‑season look at Iowa’s quarterback duel. Coach Kirk Ferentz announced before the week that both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski would see playing time. Brown started and led the Hawkeyes to touchdowns on each of the first three series, completing 12 of 20 passes for 129 yards and a six‑yard touchdown to wide receiver Tony Diaz.

Hecklinski entered in the second quarter, completing 7 of 16 attempts for 76 yards and throwing an eight‑yard score to Xavier Williams. He also recorded an interception, reminding fans that the competition remains tight and that both quarterbacks have room to grow.

Defense and special teams dominate

Iowa’s defense was relentless, limiting Northern Illinois to just 120 total yards of offense. The Huskies managed only 14 yards in the first half and did not achieve a first down until the third quarter, and that came only after a pass‑interference penalty against the Hawkeyes. The defensive line and secondary kept the opposition off the field, contributing to the shutout.

Special teams added to the scoring margin when Evan James returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown in the second half. Kicker Caden Buhr was reliable, converting two field goals to round out the scoring.

What the win means for Iowa

The 507‑120 yard advantage underscores Iowa’s balanced attack and suggests the team is well‑positioned for a strong conference run. While the quarterback battle remains unresolved, the coaching staff now has clear data on how each signal‑caller performs under game conditions.

Looking ahead, the Hawkeyes will host Iowa State next Saturday in what promises to be a pivotal rivalry matchup. Northern Illinois will travel to Illinois State for its next game.

Takeaway

There is no definitive leader in the quarterback competition yet, but the offense showed efficiency under Brown and flashes of promise from Hecklinski. Iowa’s defense and special teams proved dominant, setting a high bar for the rest of the season.
