DES MOINES, Iowa – As temperatures drop and winter draws near, the Iowa State Fire Marshal Division issued a timely reminder for residents to take steps that protect families from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Key safety steps
- Check your alarms. Install CO alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. Test them regularly and replace them according to the manufacturer’s schedule.
- Inspect heating equipment. Have furnaces, fireplaces, and other fuel‑burning appliances inspected and serviced by qualified professionals before the cold season begins.
- Use generators safely. Never run generators indoors or in garages. Keep them outdoors at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents.
- Never idle vehicles in garages. Even with the garage door open, CO can accumulate and pose a danger.
- Recognize the symptoms. Headaches, dizziness, nausea, weakness, and confusion may signal CO exposure.
What to do if an alarm sounds
State fire officials advise that anyone who hears a carbon monoxide alarm or suspects exposure should immediately evacuate everyone to fresh air and call 911 for assistance.
Vulnerable populations
CO poisoning is especially hazardous for infants, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with certain health conditions. Taking the precautions above helps keep these loved ones safe throughout the winter months.
