KCCI sports anchor Cullen Holt found out what it takes to be Cubbie, the lovable and huggable mascot of the Iowa Cubs. Jacob Butz is in his third season as Cubbie Bear and his seventh as a mascot. He’s been a mascot performer since his freshman year of high school.
Life as a Mascot
Butz said, ‘The goal is to be an elementary teacher. Mascoting and elementary education intertwine a lot. Non-verbal communication is huge in both career fields.’ To become Cubbie, it takes about four minutes to put on the costume, and Butz averages about 50 to 100 pictures or selfies with fans a night.
Cullen Holt tried on the Cubbie Bear costume and experienced what it’s like to be the mascot. He said, ‘I had to find out what it takes to be the lovable, huggable mascot of the Iowa Cubs.’ Holt found out that being a mascot is not just about wearing a costume, but also about interacting with fans and bringing joy to the game.
