Edward Kelley and Emily Newman, a married couple from Drake University, have created a unique art quilt that filters out nitrates from water. The quilt, titled ‘It’s in the Water,’ was made with contained algae and recycled plastic.
Addressing Water Quality Concerns
The couple’s artwork is part of the For America 250 Declarations project, which aims to raise awareness about Iowa’s water quality issues. Kelley, a sculpture technician at Drake University, explained that the algae in the quilt can remediate wastewater and collect carbon on a large scale.
The quilt is open to the public at Wilson’s Orchard in Cumming until mid-September. The couple has another project, Climate Beacon, which will be showcased at Drake University by the end of the month.
