House Speaker Mike Johnson brought the fight for control of Congress to Iowa on Thursday, arguing that one of the nation’s most closely watched House races could determine whether Republicans keep their majority.
Johnson’s Iowa Visit
Campaigning alongside U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Pella, Johnson said Iowa’s 1st Congressional District is central to the GOP’s strategy heading into November’s midterm election. “This House majority runs through Iowa’s 1st District,” Johnson said.
Johnson’s stop in Pella was one of multiple campaign appearances during his Iowa visit. In addition to backing Miller-Meeks in the state’s most competitive congressional race, he is also scheduled to campaign with Republican 4th District nominee Chris McGowan before headlining The FAMiLY Leader’s annual Leadership Summit on Friday.
Why Iowa Matters
Johnson repeatedly framed Iowa as one of the states that could determine the balance of power in Washington. “If you want secure borders and safe streets and officers who are respected instead of demonized … we need Doctor Mariannette Miller-Meeks back in Congress,” Johnson said.
Later, he expanded on why House Republican leadership has invested time campaigning in Iowa. “I believe we’re going to hold every one of these seats, and Iowa’s going to be a critical part of this,” he said.
When asked why he was making campaign stops in Iowa, Johnson said the state’s influence extends well beyond its four congressional districts. “Iowa is a critically important state for America’s politics,” Johnson said. “People put an outsized influence on Iowa, but it’s well deserved.”
Johnson Attacks Bohannan
Much of Thursday’s event centered on public safety, with Johnson criticizing Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan over her opposition to Iowa’s Back the Blue Act. Johnson said Bohannan “called protecting police officers ‘dangerous and disturbing,'” referencing her comments on the legislation.
Bohannan’s campaign disputed that characterization. Campaign manager Dan Driscoll said in a statement: “Christina has always fought for local law enforcement, which is why in the legislature she introduced legislation to support police officers injured on the job and voted to toughen penalties on drug dealers and human traffickers. She was clear at the time that she opposed this bill because it risked defunding local police and making their jobs more dangerous which Christina strongly opposes. This is nothing but a pathetic attempt by Mariannette Miller-Meeks using old and tired political attacks to cover up her record of siding again and again with Washington special interests while raising gas, grocery, and healthcare costs for Iowans.”
