A New Hampshire family recently won their battle with an insurance company to get a $6,000 wheelchair for their 8-year-old son, Owen, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Medical Necessity
Owen’s doctor, Julia Shah at Boston Children’s Hospital, argued that the wheelchair was medically necessary, as Owen cannot safely and consistently meet his daily mobility needs without it.
The insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, initially denied coverage for the wheelchair, stating it was not medically necessary because Owen can still walk. However, after Owen’s doctor provided additional information, the company reversed its decision and approved the wheelchair.
Owen’s parents, Derek and Kara Hamilton, expressed frustration with the process, stating that they have had to fight for every type of treatment their son needs.
