IndyCar practice on wet Washington, D.C. streets sees spins and slow laps

Washington, D.C. – After months of anticipation, the city finally welcomed IndyCars as they took to the newly‑created Freedom 250 Grand Prix circuit on a misty, rain‑soaked morning. The practice session, the first on the downtown street layout, gave teams a first look at the challenges of a brand‑new track, but the wet conditions kept lap times modest.

Wet tires and a brief delay

Because the entire circuit was slick at the start, every car began on wet‑compound tires. A short pause was required when officials discovered a problem with the marshals’ communication system, but once the issue was resolved the sun broke through, allowing parts of the course to dry.

Opening laps at a crawl

Even after the track began to dry, the opening laps were considerably slower than what drivers could achieve on a dry surface with dry tires. The cautious approach was evident as several competitors overshot corners and used the run‑off areas for safety.

Spins and wall contacts

Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard was the first to encounter trouble, spinning and clipping the outside wall early in the session. Later, Will Power, running on the alternate red‑walled Firestone tires, lost control exiting Turn 5 and struck the wall with both right‑side tires. Rookie Christian Rasmussen also found a run‑off area and, a few laps later, clipped a tire barrier.

Fastest laps on mixed tires

When the track was at its driest, Alexander Rossi posted the quickest time of the “all‑skate” segment, a 59.606‑second lap, despite staying in the pits longer than any other driver. In the subsequent split‑group practice, Kyle Kirkwood led the first group on the alternate tire with a 57.374‑second lap, while championship leader Alex Palou topped the second group on the primary black tire with a 57.612‑second lap.

Why tire choice matters

The Freedom 250 race will require drivers to use both the primary black tires and the faster, but less durable, red‑walled alternate tires. Gaining feel for each compound during practice is crucial, as teams must balance speed with longevity over the race distance.

Looking ahead

The next practice session is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on FS2. Fans can expect the track to continue drying, giving drivers a better opportunity to push the limits of both tire types before qualifying.

While the wet start limited outright speed, the session provided valuable data for teams and a thrilling preview for Washington residents eager to see IndyCar action on their streets.
