Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto stated that he is willing to visit North Korea to open dialogue, following a request from South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. This development comes as part of Indonesia’s pursuit of maintaining good relations with all countries, including China and the United States.

Background on the Request

During his last visit to Seoul in April, Prabowo was asked by President Lee if he could visit North Korea to initiate some form of dialogue. Prabowo responded with a willingness to do so, should it be requested of him. He emphasized Indonesia’s non-aligned foreign policy and its commitment to not interfering in the domestic affairs of other countries.

Lee’s office has not provided an immediate response to the request for comment. It is worth noting that Indonesia has traditionally maintained a non-aligned stance in its foreign policy.

Previous Mediation Efforts

This is not the first instance of Prabowo expressing his willingness to mediate. In March, Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono mentioned that Prabowo was open to acting as a mediator in the Iran conflict, aiming to de-escalate the situation in the region.

Lee and Prabowo discussed energy security and agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as defense during their April meeting. Lee has been working to ease tensions with North Korea since taking office, but his overtures for dialogue have been consistently rebuffed by North Korea, which declared South Korea a ‘hostile nation’ in 2024.
