Indianapolis made a splash on the national and world stage this week as the 2026 Pro Swim Series wrapped up at the city’s aquatic facilities, producing some of the most memorable performances in recent swimming history.
Swimmer Kate Douglass set a world record in the 50 freestyle during the competition — a feat she herself described with disbelief. “Did not expect (that) like ever,” Douglass said after her record-breaking swim, according to IndyStar.
The record-setting excitement didn’t stop there. Indiana University’s own Van Mathias broke two American records over the course of the meet, adding a hometown highlight to an already landmark event. Mathias, competing for IU, made headlines throughout the competition, including a late-meet decision to scratch the 50 butterfly in favor of the 100 breaststroke on the final day — a gamble that paid off with history-making results, according to Indiana University Athletics and SwimSwam.
The multi-day event drew top professional swimmers from across the country to Indianapolis, showcasing the city as a premier destination for elite aquatic competition. Race videos from all four days of the meet were made available for fans to relive the record-breaking moments.
For Indianapolis, the Pro Swim Series served as a reminder of the city’s long-standing reputation as one of America’s great sports towns — and this year, the pool delivered some of the biggest headlines of all.
