Indiana Gov. Braun Announces Up to $5,000 Grants for Flood Victims

Central Indiana continues to recover from the severe flooding that struck the region earlier this month. In response, Governor Mike Braun announced a statewide grant program designed to help families and individuals whose homes or property were damaged.

Grant details and eligibility

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security will administer the grants, which provide up to $5,000 per household. Eligible expenses include emergency food, clothing, temporary housing, and other essential items needed to stabilize a household after a storm or flood event. Applicants must be Indiana residents who have experienced direct damage or loss as a result of the recent flooding.

How to apply

Those in need can apply online through the state’s disaster assistance portal or by calling the statewide 211 hotline for guidance. The application process requires basic personal information, proof of residence, and documentation of the damage or loss. Assistance is being offered on a first‑come, first‑served basis, so residents are encouraged to submit their requests promptly.

Community resources

Local nonprofits, churches, and volunteer groups are also mobilizing to provide additional support. Several community organizations have set up donation drives for clothing, non‑perishable food, and household supplies. Faith‑based groups are coordinating temporary shelter locations for families displaced by the floods.

Neighborhood associations across Marion, Hamilton, and Hendricks counties have organized clean‑up crews to remove debris and help homeowners assess structural damage. Residents are urged to work together, share resources, and report any unsafe conditions to local authorities.

What families can do to help neighbors

Many Hoosiers are looking for ways to assist neighbors who are struggling. Volunteers are needed for sandbag‑filling stations, debris removal, and transportation of supplies. Local churches have opened their fellowship halls as temporary shelters, and schools are offering space for community meetings and resource distribution.

Donations of gently used clothing, blankets, and canned goods can be dropped off at designated collection points listed on the 211 website. Those who can contribute financially are encouraged to give through the state’s disaster relief fund, which will allocate resources directly to the most urgent needs.

Looking ahead

Governor Braun emphasized that the grant program is part of a broader effort to strengthen Indiana’s resilience to future storms. The administration is also reviewing long‑term infrastructure improvements, including upgraded drainage systems and floodplain management policies, to reduce the impact of similar events.

Residents who have already received assistance are asked to share their experiences with local officials to help refine the program. The state will continue to monitor the situation and adjust resources as needed to ensure that all affected Hoosiers receive the help they need to rebuild their lives.
