Pleasant Home School Welcomes Students Back with New Safety Measures and CTE Programs

Covington County, Alabama – The Pleasant Home School opened its doors to students on August 17, marking the final district in the River Region to resume classes for the 2026‑27 school year. Principal Dr. Barry Wood highlighted several improvements aimed at creating a safer and more academically robust environment for every learner.

Enhanced Safety for Pick‑Up and Bus Loading

In response to parent concerns and recent safety audits, the school district reconfigured the pick‑up and bus‑loading areas. New traffic flow patterns, clearly marked lanes, and additional crossing guards are now in place to protect children as they arrive and depart each day. Dr. Wood said the changes “ensure that families can feel confident that their children are protected during the busiest moments of the school day.”

Expansion of Career‑Technical Education (CTE) Courses

Beyond safety upgrades, Pleasant Home School introduced a suite of career‑technical education (CTE) courses. These programs, ranging from automotive technology to health sciences, are designed to give students practical skills that align with local workforce needs. The district expects the CTE offerings to increase student engagement and improve post‑secondary outcomes, especially for those who plan to enter the job market directly after graduation.

Senior Students Embrace the Changes

Senior class members, many of whom are experiencing their first day of school in a new setting, expressed enthusiasm for the updates. “It feels good to see the school thinking about our safety and future careers,” said senior Alex Johnson, a prospective graduate of the automotive program. The seniors also noted that the new environment sets a positive tone for their final year and the transition to college or employment.

Looking Ahead

Dr. Wood emphasized that the district’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to provide a “wonderful start that leads to a wonderful finish” for the academic year. The administration plans to monitor the effectiveness of the safety measures and CTE curriculum throughout the year, making adjustments as needed based on feedback from parents, teachers, and students.

Community members are encouraged to attend upcoming school board meetings to stay informed about further developments and to voice any additional concerns. The school’s commitment to safety, academic excellence, and career readiness reflects Covington County’s dedication to supporting families and preparing the next generation for success.
