During Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4‑10), Indiana State Fire Marshal Steve Jones is traveling across the state to remind residents of simple steps that can prevent dangerous lithium‑ion battery fires. The campaign focuses on everyday charging habits that protect families and homes.
Use the right charger and charge on a hard surface
Jones stresses that the safest way to charge any device is to use the charger and cord that came with it, or a replacement approved by the manufacturer. He adds that charging should be done on a hard, flat surface such as a table or desk. Soft surfaces like beds, couches or under pillows can trap heat, increasing the risk of a fire.
Watch for warning signs
Consumers are urged to stop using a device immediately if it becomes unusually hot, begins to swell, emits smoke, or develops an odd smell. These are classic indicators of a damaged or failing battery that could ignite.
Unplug when fully charged
Leaving a device plugged in after it reaches 100 % is another common mistake. Jones recommends unplugging devices once they are fully charged rather than allowing them to sit on the charger for extended periods.
Charge larger battery‑powered items safely
For larger items such as e‑bikes, electric scooters and power tools, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security advises charging them outdoors and away from exits. This reduces the chance that a battery malfunction could block an evacuation route.
State Fire Marshal Steve Jones is available for media interviews on Oct. 7 and Oct. 9 to discuss fire‑prevention strategies and answer questions from the public.
By following these straightforward guidelines, Hoosiers can help keep their families safe and reduce the number of lithium‑ion battery incidents during the holiday season and beyond.
