An independent autopsy for Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old who died after a Fourth of July boating trip, couldn’t rule out foul play. The autopsy, arranged by the family and civil rights attorney Ben Crump, found some significant findings, including discoloration in the soft tissue of the back of the head.

The investigation into Wells’ death is ongoing, with the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducting its own autopsy. The results have not been released yet. Crump said the independent autopsy was necessary to determine if Wells had any physical injuries to his body beyond drowning.

The still-unknown circumstances around Wells’ death have touched off rampant online speculation and prompted calls from Black leaders for transparency from local authorities. A reward of $125,000 is being offered in exchange for information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with the death.
