Where the Springs Meet the Sky: Paddling Shingle Creek Has Nothing on This Hidden Waterway

There is a moment — and if you have experienced it, you know exactly what I mean — when you dip your paddle into dark, glass-clear water, a great blue heron lifts off from a cypress knee not ten feet away, and the noise of everyday life simply evaporates. That moment is waiting for you at Katie’s Landing, a laid-back canoe and kayak outpost tucked along the Wekiva River just north of Apopka, roughly thirty minutes from downtown Orlando.

Katie’s Landing sits at the edge of the Wekiva River Wilderness, a mosaic of state forest, wildlife management land, and protected springs that together form one of Central Florida’s most intact natural corridors. The outpost itself is refreshingly no-frills: a sandy launch area shaded by ancient live oaks, a small rental shed stocked with single and tandem kayaks as well as canoes, and staff who genuinely love talking about the river and everything living in it. There is no overpriced gift shop, no ticketed queue, no selfie stations. Just water, wildlife, and the sound of wind moving through Spanish moss.

The paddling route most visitors choose follows the Wekiva River downstream toward its confluence with the St. Johns, a round trip that can stretch anywhere from two to five hours depending on how many times you stop to watch a family of river otters or crane your neck at an osprey circling overhead. Water temperatures stay around 68 degrees year-round thanks to the spring systems feeding the river, which means even on a sweltering August afternoon the air above the water carries a noticeable coolness. In winter, you may spot manatees drifting upstream to warm themselves in the spring flow — a sight that never gets old no matter how many times you see it.

The river corridor is remarkably diverse. Paddling through, you will move between open marsh dotted with wading birds, tunnels of overhanging swamp bay and red maple, and long straightaways where the water runs so clear you can watch largemouth bass holding in the current below your hull. Alligators are a regular presence along the banks, though they are typically well-fed and utterly uninterested in kayakers who keep a respectful distance.

Katie’s Landing requires reservations on busy weekends, so booking a day or two ahead is wise. Rentals are reasonably priced, and the staff will walk first-timers through everything they need to know. Bring water, sunscreen, and a dry bag for your phone. Wear clothes you do not mind getting splashed. Leave the agenda at home.

Orlando is famous for its manufactured thrills, and those have their place. But the Wekiva River offers something harder to engineer: genuine wildness, unhurried and extraordinary, right on the city’s doorstep. Once you have paddled it, you will understand why people come back season after season.
