Residents across Arizona should be on high alert this weekend as increased fire danger looms over the state due to high winds and low relative humidity. The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings for various regions, urging residents to exercise caution to prevent wildfires.
Red Flag Warnings in Effect
In Maricopa County and the lower deserts, a Red Flag Warning is in place from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. Winds from the south are expected to range between 10 and 20 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 35 miles per hour. Mohave County will experience similar conditions, with a Red Flag Warning extending through both Saturday and Sunday. Here, winds from the southwest are anticipated to be between 20 and 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 45 miles per hour.
The rest of northern Arizona is not exempt, as a Red Flag Warning is set for Sunday, with southwest winds predicted to be between 15 and 25 miles per hour and gusts up to 45 miles per hour. Temperatures in the Valley are expected to remain in the triple digits throughout the upcoming week, further exacerbating fire risks.
Precautionary Measures
The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid outdoor activities that could create flames or sparks. This includes refraining from driving or pulling over on grass, properly disposing of cigarettes, securing tow chains to prevent dragging, and avoiding the use of charcoal grills.
According to the Arizona Interagency Wildfire Prevention, common causes of wildfires in the state include dragging trailer safety chains, rims from flat tires striking pavement, vehicles parking or driving over dry vegetation, carelessly tossed cigarettes, abandoned campfires, equipment use, debris burning around homes, fireworks, and the discharge of firearms in dry areas.
Wildfire Preparedness
Residents in wildfire-prone areas are encouraged to have an emergency supplies kit ready in case of evacuation. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests storing emergency supplies in a plastic tub, small suitcase, or other portable containers. Essential items include three gallons of water per person, a three-day supply of ready-to-eat food, a first-aid kit, prescription medications, and important family documents in a waterproof container.
Other recommended items include a sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person, a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio, a dust mask or cotton T-shirt to filter the air, matches in a waterproof container, and a complete change of clothing stored in a waterproof container.
