Importance of Reading in Childhood

As a child, I remember buying books from school fundraisers. These books were affordable and sparked my interest in reading. The school would hand out a pamphlet with a wide selection of paperback and hardback books, and we could buy them with our limited allowance money.

The Joy of Reading

Looking back, I realize that those books played a significant role in developing my love for reading. The books were not assigned by teachers, but rather chosen by us, which made them more appealing. We would study the catalogs, compare prices, and decide which books to buy. Sometimes, we would trade books with friends, and they would make the rounds through the neighborhood before ending up on someone’s bookshelf.

Those book sales also helped schools raise money, which was used to support various activities and resources. The books were not just a source of entertainment but also a way to develop our imagination, vocabulary, and communication skills. Reading opens doors that television, phones, and video games cannot, and it stretches a child’s imagination by requiring them to create their own pictures.

Today, there are many ways to read, including digital downloads and audiobooks. However, the simple idea behind those old paper catalogs remains the same: give children something that interests them, and let them choose. Don’t worry if it’s not a classic or a particular genre; the love of reading rarely begins with assignments. It usually begins with curiosity, and that curiosity can be sparked by a simple, interesting book.
