IMPD Reports 38% Drop in Non‑Fatal Shootings in Indianapolis for 2026

Indianapolis – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) announced a substantial reduction in non‑fatal shootings for the city in 2026. So far this year, IMPD recorded 185 incidents involving 214 victims, compared with 289 incidents and 345 victims during the same period in 2025. That represents a 38% year‑over‑year decline.

Five‑Year Downward Trend

Deputy Chief of Investigations Kendale Adams told FOX 59 the numbers reflect a broader five‑year downward trend that began in 2022. “These numbers represent people,” Adams said. “These are lives that are being saved.” He added that a few years ago many offenders remained on the streets after committing violent acts, whereas today a larger share are being held accountable.

Clearance Rate Improves

IMPD also reported a 40% clearance rate for non‑fatal shootings, significantly higher than the national average of roughly 25%. “We still have too many being injured because of gun violence, but we’re going to continue to press forward trying to hold people accountable,” Adams said.

Impact on Police Resources

The decline in violent incidents has allowed detectives more time to focus on repeat offenders and complex investigations. “With less violence, detectives can devote additional resources to solving cases involving repeat offenders,” Adams explained.

Community Implications

City leaders and community members have welcomed the data, viewing it as evidence that IMPD’s strategic emphasis on targeted enforcement and community partnership is bearing fruit. The department’s approach includes increased patrols in high‑risk neighborhoods, rapid response teams, and outreach programs aimed at preventing gun violence before it occurs.

Looking Ahead

IMPD officials say the downward trend is encouraging but emphasize that continued vigilance is essential. The department plans to expand its gun‑violence prevention initiatives, strengthen collaboration with local schools and faith‑based organizations, and maintain the focus on holding offenders accountable.

Residents are urged to report suspicious activity and support community‑based safety programs. As the city moves forward, the partnership between law enforcement and Indianapolis families remains a cornerstone of the effort to keep neighborhoods safe and secure.
