Immigrant Families Face Tough Choices

Immigrant families across the US are facing difficult choices due to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. Some are considering giving up their unborn children for adoption, while others are leaving the country to avoid separation from their families.

Fear of Deportation

Many immigrant parents are naming guardians for their children in case they are detained or deported. In Maryland, a Salvadoran mother signed legal papers naming a priest as temporary guardian of her 7-year-old son.

Emma Confesor, a 39-year-old immigrant from Mexico, considered giving up her unborn child for adoption due to uncertainty surrounding birthright citizenship. However, after the Supreme Court ruled that the 14th Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship, her fears began to lift.

Departure and Separation

Some families have already left the US, while others are preparing for the possibility of separation. Abdiel and Adilene Domínguez, who had built their lives in Minnesota, sold their home and belongings and left for Mexico due to fear of deportation.

In Pittsburgh, a family with three US-born children is moving to Mexico together to avoid the risk of the father being detained and not returning home.

Community Impact

The immigration crackdown is also affecting the daily lives of immigrants, with many staying home from work, keeping children out of school, and avoiding public places. Some churches have moved services online, and congregations are helping families with groceries and school pickups.
