A 10-year-old girl from Greensboro, North Carolina, was rescued from a rip current at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on August 7. Summer McCallum was saved by Derrick Moore, a 47-year-old father of four from Georgia, who unfortunately drowned after the rescue.

A Heroic Act

Summer described the frightening ordeal, saying she was scared and tried to swim and float, but the current was relentless. Her uncle, Ernest McCallum, was on the shore and saw her struggling. He ran into the water to help her, and a few good Samaritans, including Moore, jumped in to assist.

Moore told Summer to grab his arm, but he was also struggling once he got to her. The others reached the pair with a float, and Summer made it back to shore, but Moore did not. His body surfaced the next day.

Summer’s mom, Kamille Raines, said she is grateful for Moore’s heroic act and will spend her life thanking him. Summer also expressed her gratitude, saying she owes her life to Moore.
