However, the state has been criticized for not doing enough to address the issue of problem gambling. Illinois dedicates less than 0.1% of its gambling revenues to treating addiction, with only $1.5 million allocated annually for treatment since 2020.
The Illinois Gaming Board has attempted to regulate the industry, but has faced challenges in keeping up with the rapid expansion of online gaming operators. The state’s self-exclusion program, which allows compulsive gamblers to ban themselves from casinos and sportsbooks, has also been criticized for not being effective enough.
Consequences of Gambling Addiction
Gambling addiction can have severe consequences, including financial ruin, relationship problems, and even suicide. The National Council on Problem Gambling estimates that one in five problem gamblers have tried to take their own life. In Illinois, it is estimated that around 383,000 adults have a gambling problem, with another 761,000 at risk of developing one.
