Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed several new laws on Friday, including one requiring most retailers to accept cash payments beginning in 2028. The law, House Bill 4592, applies to retailers that employ someone to process in-person consumer transactions and requires them to accept cash payments on purchases under $500.
Another law, House Bill 4844, requires employers to pay their employees their full rate of pay while they are serving on jury duty, with some exceptions for small businesses. This law takes effect immediately.
Additionally, House Bill 4788 requires schools to provide both breasted and non-breasted manikins for CPR practice in middle school and high school, starting in the 2028-2029 school year. The goal is to give students more practice with female victims, who are less likely to receive help from bystanders when suffering cardiac arrest.
Other laws signed by the Governor include Senate Bill 3314, which requires higher education institutions to provide more transparency about faculty teaching loads, and House Bill 4654, which requires the Illinois Department of Transportation to install signs with resources for human trafficking victims in rest areas.
