Bryan José Rojas Galofre, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was detained by ICE at the Trump National Doral hotel in Florida. Rojas, 34, had taken his wife, Socorro Zaragosa, a U.S. citizen and supporter of President Trump, to the hotel for their honeymoon.
Detention and Accusations
Rojas was stopped at a security checkpoint and found to have an air pistol and a metal marijuana grinder in his vehicle. He was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. During his detention, Rojas was accused of having ties to Venezuelan gangs due to his tattoos, which he claims are personal and not related to any gang affiliation.
Rojas spent over three months in ICE custody, during which time he lost his job, work permit, and driver’s license. His family had to deplete his 401(k) and sell their house and car to pay for his bail and legal fees. Rojas’ attorney, Tahimi Rengifo, stated that the case against Rojas was an example of the heavy focus on tattoos and alleged gang connections under the Trump administration.
Immigration Status and Family
Rojas had entered the U.S. in 2021 and was released while his asylum application was being processed. He had been working in Wisconsin and was promoted to line supervisor at a brake disc factory. Rojas married Zaragosa in 2024 and began the process of seeking to adjust his immigration status through family sponsorship.
Zaragosa, who is a U.S. citizen, expressed disappointment with the way her husband was treated, stating that what happened to her family wasn’t fair. Rojas’ next immigration hearing is scheduled for 2028, and he remains in an immigration limbo, unsure of his future in the U.S.
