IBM and NASA release open‑source AI model to map lunar ice and craters

In a joint effort to boost scientific research and the United States’ lunar ambitions, IBM and NASA announced Thursday the launch of the NASA‑IBM Lunar Foundation Model, an open‑source artificial‑intelligence system designed to help scientists analyze decades of Moon observation data.

What the model does

The model was trained on more than 30 layers of data gathered by nine instruments across four NASA missions, including the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. By combining high‑resolution imagery, topographic maps, thermal readings and other datasets, the AI can automatically detect key surface features that previously required painstaking manual review.

According to the agencies, the system can pinpoint potential ice deposits in the Moon’s permanently shadowed regions, map craters to identify safe landing sites, and study volcanic formations. In benchmark tests the model identified these features up to 23% more accurately than widely used existing methods.

Why lunar ice matters

Ice on the Moon is more than a scientific curiosity; it represents a source of water and oxygen that could be harvested for life‑support systems and for producing rocket fuel. Such in‑situ resources are essential for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon in 2028 and eventually establish a sustainable base that can serve as a springboard for missions to Mars.

Open‑source benefits

By making the Lunar Foundation Model publicly available, IBM and NASA join their existing Prithvi family of open foundation models that serve geospatial, weather and other applications. Researchers, universities and private companies can download the code, adapt it to their own datasets, and contribute improvements back to the community.

“Open‑source tools accelerate discovery and democratize access to cutting‑edge technology,” said an IBM spokesperson. “We’re proud to partner with NASA to provide a resource that will help the entire space‑science ecosystem move faster toward a permanent lunar presence.”

Looking ahead

The model’s release comes as the Artemis program prepares for its next crewed flight, which will test new lander designs and surface habitats. Accurate mapping of ice‑rich regions and safe landing zones will be critical for mission planning and for ensuring astronaut safety.

NASA officials expect that the AI system will also aid future commercial lunar ventures, enabling private firms to assess resource potential and site suitability more efficiently.

For now, the Lunar Foundation Model stands as a tangible example of how public‑private collaboration can deliver practical tools that support both scientific inquiry and the nation’s broader space‑exploration goals.
