I‑91 North near Windsor Exit 37 closed after fuel‑leaking truck crash

Early Thursday morning, drivers traveling north on Interstate 91 in Windsor encountered an unexpected disruption near Exit 37. At approximately 8:17 a.m., Connecticut State Police responded to reports of a collision involving a large tractor‑trailer that was leaking fuel.

Emergency response and lane closure

State troopers quickly secured the scene and called in additional resources. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the Windsor Fire Department were dispatched to address the fuel leak and ensure public safety. Because of the hazardous material, officials closed the right‑hand travel lane of I‑91 in the immediate area of the crash.

No injuries reported

Fortunately, the incident did not result in any reported injuries. Police confirmed that all occupants of the tractor‑trailer and any nearby motorists were unharmed. The swift actions of first‑responders helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.

Impact on commuters

Motorists heading north on I‑91 were advised to use alternate routes while the right lane remained closed. The closure affected traffic flow through Windsor and surrounding towns, prompting drivers to consider detours via local roads such as Route 159 or Route 75. Commuters were encouraged to stay updated through local news outlets and the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s traffic alerts.

Ongoing investigation

State police indicated that the investigation into the cause of the collision remains active. While the exact circumstances leading to the crash have not yet been released, authorities are reviewing video footage, witness statements and the condition of the vehicle. The DEEP will continue monitoring the fuel leak to ensure that any environmental impact is mitigated.

Public‑safety reminder

Incidents like this underscore the importance of staying alert while driving, especially on high‑speed corridors such as I‑91. The Connecticut Highway Safety Office reminds motorists to maintain a safe following distance, obey posted speed limits and report any hazardous spills or accidents promptly.

Residents of Windsor and the broader Hartford County area can expect the right lane to reopen once the fuel spill is fully contained and the roadway cleared. Updates will be provided by state police and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as the situation develops.
