A power outage in Des Moines put thousands of pounds of perishable food at risk at DMARC’s warehouse. However, quick action from Hy-Vee helped protect the supply. Within 15 minutes, Hy-Vee arrived with refrigerated trucks to help keep the food safe in case the power outage lasted longer.
DMARC, a food pantry network that supplies 13 pantries across the metro for free, faced potential losses in its freezers and coolers. The power came back on within three hours, allowing the food to remain safe in the freezer. DMARC said it helped about 28,000 people just last month.
DMARC locations include Grimes, Ankeny, Urbandale, Waukee, Altoona, Des Moines, Clive, Pleasant Hill, and West Des Moines. The organization relies on community support to continue its mission of providing food to those in need.
