Huntsville Animal Services is taking proactive steps to ensure pet safety during the upcoming fireworks season by hosting the ‘Boom Proof Your Pet’ event. Scheduled for Sunday, June 14, from 2–6 p.m. at the Jaycee Building in John Hunt Park, this free event aims to equip pet owners in Huntsville and Madison County with the tools and knowledge needed to keep their pets safe.
Event Details and Offerings
The event, sponsored by the Huntsville Animal Service Foundation, will provide a range of services including microchipping, DAPP vaccinations, rabies shots, and spay/neuter vouchers for City of Huntsville residents. Additionally, attendees can receive collars, leashes, personalized ID tags, dog toys, and pet food. Registration is required for all participants, even those whose pets are already microchipped.
John Fischer, Director of Huntsville Animal Services, emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, “Every year, we see pets arrive after bolting in fear from fireworks. Our goal is to get ahead of the problem by empowering families with what they need before the celebrations begin.”
Importance of Microchipping
Microchipping is highlighted as a crucial measure for reuniting lost pets with their families. Fischer noted, “Microchips are your pet’s free ride home. If we scan your animal and he has a microchip with up-to-date information, we’re just going to take him straight home. He never has to come to the shelter.”
The event is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the annual surge of displaced pets during summer celebrations. Last year, the event helped about 200 animals, and organizers hope to more than double that number this year. A “Know Before You Go” video is available for residents, providing details on services and registration.
Residents are encouraged to register in advance to ensure they can take full advantage of the services offered at the ‘Boom Proof Your Pet’ event, making Huntsville a safer and happier place for pets.
